Carbon Credit Project Registration for Biogas Plant

Indonesia

Project Reference

OVERVIEW

Indonesia palm oil mills are generating residue from treating effluent by way of conventional method of leaving the residue in open lagoons and emitting methane. The potential of using palm oil mill effluent as a renewable energy is still an unfamiliar territory, as most mills are comfortable with the affordable cost in the operations of open lagoon system of treatment.

CHALLENGE

As more awareness in climate change is happening and that Indonesia government are looking into reducing fuel subsidies releasing climate actions and green policies, many mills are looking into green technology. However, for implementation of biogas projects from open lagoons, economical barrier namely high initial cost for investment, infrastructure and technology remain as the biggest challenge for these mills.

SOLUTION

Biogas from captured methane can be reproduced to heat and electricity which can be further explored and converted to other energies. Most common use of this converted energy is as electricity replacement. The least explored ones amongst others include upgrading to biomethane. Uses include vehicle fuel as well as exporting to the grid thus replacing fossil fuel intensive power plants generation. With the many uses of biogas capture, despite the high investment cause, these projects are still feasible without funding. This is made possible with various carbon credit schemes that can be explored.

OUTCOME

There are a lot of voluntary carbon schemes for carbon credit out there that are actively financing projects. The various parties that partake in a carbon credit project including the mills, can agree on funding and carbon credit sharing that will benefit all parties in the implementation of these projects. Project implementation can run hand-in-hand with registration of the project of chosen scheme.
